Disability Support Services at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang

Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang is committed to promoting equality, inclusion, and accessibility for all members of its academic community, including students with disabilities. Through its Disability Support Services, the university provides a range of accommodations and support mechanisms to ensure that students with disabilities can fully access learning opportunities and participate in campus life. These services include academic support, accessible facilities, and appropriate learning adjustments tailored to individual needs.

This commitment is further strengthened by formal institutional policies, as outlined in the UNIMUS Rector’s Decree No. 610/UNIMUS/SK.PP/2024 on disability support , which serves as a foundation for the implementation of these services. The university continuously strives to remove barriers to education by enhancing accessibility, raising awareness, and fostering an inclusive campus culture. This reflects Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang’s dedication to ensuring equal opportunities and empowering all students to achieve their full potential in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Unimus is a university equipped with modern infrastructure, as demonstrated by its disability-friendly buildings that comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (SMK3) standards. This strongly supports the implementation of the Catur Dharma of Higher Education. All infrastructure is maintained regularly to ensure its quality and reliability. Unimus also periodically conducts facility feasibility tests through the Center for Occupational Hygiene and Health (Hyperkes). The completeness of facilities and infrastructure at Unimus supports the smooth implementation of both academic and non-academic learning processes. Several areas within Unimus have also provided access for users with disabilities.

The Disability Services Unit (ULD) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang is a service unit tasked with providing support to students with disabilities so they can optimally participate in the educational process. The ULD was officially established in 2025 through Rector’s Decree No. 146/UNIMUS/SK.KP/2025 as a form of the institution’s commitment to creating inclusive and disability-friendly higher education.

The establishment of this unit aligns with national policies encouraging universities to provide services and facilities for students with disabilities. In general, the main functions of the Disability Services Unit at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang are as follows:

  1. Collecting data on students with disabilities.
  2. Providing academic assistance services for students with disabilities.
  3. Developing inclusive learning systems.
  4. Facilitating accessibility to campus facilities and infrastructure.
  5. Conducting socialization and advocacy related to inclusive education within the university environment.

Currently, there are 18 active students with disabilities studying at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang. Their presence serves as an important foundation for the university to continuously develop a more comprehensive disability service system. As part of its commitment to creating a disability-friendly campus environment, Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang has provided several accessibility-supporting facilities for students with disabilities, including:

  1. Designated parking areas for persons with disabilities to facilitate mobility within the campus.
  2. Wheelchairs available for students who require mobility support.
  3. Special disability access ramps to facilitate entry to buildings and campus facilities.
  4. Accessible pathways that support mobility across the campus environment.
  5. Assistance services for students with disabilities through volunteers or academic companions.
  6. A campus environment that is being progressively developed toward a universal accessibility concept.

UNIMUS Health and Wellness Services

UNIMUS is committed to supporting the mental and physical well-being of its students through comprehensive guidance and counseling services. These services are designed to assist students in managing academic challenges, personal development, and emotional health, creating a supportive and inclusive campus environment that promotes overall well-being.

This commitment is further strengthened by the availability of healthcare facilities, including Unimus Hospital and the Unimus Primary Clinic. These facilities provide accessible and integrated medical services for the academic community, ensuring that students receive proper care and support to maintain a healthy and productive campus life.
