Himatepa UNIMUS Conducts Training on Converting Organic Waste into Compost in Ringinarum, Kendal

Kendal – The Food Technology Student Association (Himatepa) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang, through its Student Capacity Strengthening Program team, organized a community service activity in the form of training on utilizing organic waste to produce compost. The program was held on August 23, 2025, in Ringinarum Village, Kendal.

The training involved members of Akashatani (young farmer cadres) as well as local women farmers, who showed great enthusiasm, particularly during the hands-on compost-making practice using organic materials readily available in their surroundings.

The activity was structured into two main sessions: a theoretical session and a practical session. During the theoretical session, the Food Technology team delivered materials on the importance of managing organic waste as an environmentally friendly solution to reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. Participants were also introduced to the basic principles of composting, the benefits of organic fertilizers for soil fertility, and the economic potential of organic waste utilization.

In the practical session, participants directly learned the process of making compost, including sorting materials, mixing, layering, and fermentation. The method applied in this training was the stacked bucket technique, which is simple and easy to implement. Participants actively engaged in each step of the compost production process.

The program supervisor, Siti Aminah, explained that the training aimed to achieve two main objectives: reducing the accumulation of organic waste and providing environmentally friendly fertilizers that can be used by farmers themselves or developed into economic products.

Through this initiative, the community of Ringinarum Village is expected to become more self-reliant in producing organic fertilizers while promoting sustainable agricultural practices. This activity also reflects Himatepa UNIMUS’s commitment to delivering practical solutions that benefit society, particularly in environmental management and organic agriculture development.
