The Undergraduate Program in Marine Science at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS), in collaboration with the Reef Check Indonesia Foundation, has officially established a strategic partnership marked by the signing of a cooperation agreement and a public lecture themed “Coral Reefs and Climate Change” on November 21, 2025. This initiative represents a significant step in strengthening collaboration in research, community service, and the advancement of marine science.
During the event, the Executive Director of Reef Check Indonesia, Derta Prabuning, explained that the organization originated from a volunteer movement among diving communities in Karimunjawa in 1997. Over time, it has evolved into an independent institution focusing on monitoring, education, and conservation of marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs. He emphasized that this collaboration serves as a platform for sharing knowledge and experience, as well as facilitating joint academic activities involving lecturers and students.
Meanwhile, a representative from the Faculty of Agricultural Science and Technology (FSTP) UNIMUS, Hanityo Adi Nugroho, highlighted that this partnership comes at a crucial time, considering the increasing complexity of global environmental and marine challenges. He noted that cross-institutional collaboration is essential for producing high-quality research and implementing real actions that benefit coastal communities. The partnership also covers education, research, community engagement, and capacity building in coastal conservation and climate change mitigation.
The public lecture, featuring Derta Prabuning and Fawzia Nasution as speakers, discussed the current alarming condition of coral reefs, which are increasingly threatened by coral bleaching, rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and human activities. Coral reefs play a vital role as habitats for marine biodiversity, natural coastal protectors, and economic support systems for coastal populations.
Through this initiative, it is expected that awareness will grow regarding the importance of preserving coral reef sustainability as part of maintaining marine ecosystem balance. The collaboration between UNIMUS and Reef Check Indonesia is also anticipated to expand further, generate innovations, and strengthen academic capacity in addressing marine issues in the future.
Ultimately, this partnership is not merely ceremonial but represents the beginning of a long-term commitment to safeguarding marine resources for future generations.
