Strengthening Urban Issue Understanding, Civil Engineering Program at UNIMUS Discusses Flood Control Strategies in Semarang

Semarang | The Undergraduate Civil Engineering Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS) organized a public lecture titled “Flood Control and Drainage System Development in Semarang City” on Monday, January 12, 2026. This activity was part of an academic initiative to broaden students’ perspectives on urban flooding issues and sustainable engineering solutions. The event took place at the Auditorium of GKB III Building, 1st Floor, and was attended by students, lecturers, and members of the academic community at UNIMUS. The lecture also attracted participants from other universities, particularly those from related fields of study. The Head of the Civil Engineering Program explained that the lecture aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the recurring flood problems in Semarang. As a major city in Indonesia, Semarang faces flooding challenges influenced by natural conditions, geographical factors, and human activities that affect urban water management systems. He added that the activity was designed to bridge theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom with real-world applications, particularly in planning and developing effective and sustainable urban drainage systems. During the session, an experienced expert in flood control presented the current flood conditions in Semarang, the contributing factors, and various strategies for flood mitigation and drainage system development. The material was delivered comprehensively by linking civil engineering concepts with practical implementation. The session continued with an interactive discussion and Q&A segment, where participants actively engaged with the speaker, explored the issues in depth, and connected the material with relevant case studies. Through this public lecture, the Civil Engineering Program at UNIMUS hopes that students will gain a more practical and contextual understanding of urban flooding issues and be able to contribute to innovative and sustainable engineering solutions for future urban development.

Unimus Undergoes Field Evaluation for the Establishment of Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Program

Semarang | Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (Unimus) has undergone a field evaluation as part of the proposal process to establish a Specialist Medical Education Program (PPDS-1) in Obstetrics and Gynecology within its Faculty of Medicine. This evaluation is part of the quality assurance mechanism conducted by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology through the Directorate General of Higher Education. The evaluation took place at the Unimus Hospital Hall and was attended by the Rector of Unimus, Prof. Dr. Masrukhi, M.Pd., along with university leaders and representatives from the Faculty of Medicine. Various stakeholders were also present, including representatives from the Regional Higher Education Service Institution (LLDIKTI Region VI), the Central Java Provincial Health Office, the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) of Central Java, partner hospitals, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Diponegoro University (Undip) as the mentoring institution for the program. The evaluation team assigned by the Directorate General of Higher Education consisted of experts responsible for assessing the readiness of Unimus to implement the specialist medical education program. In his remarks, the Rector emphasized the university’s strong commitment to developing the Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist program. He noted that the initiative is driven by national needs, particularly the still high maternal and infant mortality rates in Indonesia. Therefore, Unimus is committed to preparing the program thoroughly, prioritizing quality from planning to implementation. He also expressed hope for guidance and support from the evaluation team, LLDIKTI Region VI, and partner hospitals throughout the process. Meanwhile, a representative of the evaluation team appreciated Unimus’ initiative in addressing the national need for specialist doctors. He highlighted that establishing such programs requires careful attention to quality, even as the government accelerates efforts to meet the demand for medical specialists. The evaluation aims to ensure that the proposed program meets competency standards. It also emphasizes aligning student intake with regional needs, strengthening collaboration with teaching hospitals, and ensuring a safe and violence-free educational environment. Support was also expressed by LLDIKTI Region VI, which stated that this field evaluation is a continuation of the earlier proposal process. Although some minor revisions are still needed, ongoing assistance is being provided to ensure the successful establishment of the program. Through this evaluation, it is expected that the Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Program at Unimus can soon be realized, contributing to the improvement of healthcare services, particularly maternal and child health, both in Central Java and across Indonesia.

UNIMUS Students Achieve Best Impactful Paper Award in International Research Competition

Semarang — Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS) has once again achieved an outstanding accomplishment at the international level through the participation of its students in the International Research Paper Competition (IRPC). This prestigious event brought together students from Diploma, Undergraduate, and Postgraduate levels from various universities both domestically and internationally. Held on December 18, 2025, at the National University of Singapore (NUS), the competition served as a platform for young scholars to develop critical and innovative thinking skills, as well as to present research findings that address contemporary educational challenges within a global collaborative environment. In this competition, the UNIMUS delegation, consisting of Richmond Ampah-Mensah, Sidney Akumu Odongo, and Abdul Aziz Agbo, successfully won the Best Impactful Paper Award. This award is given to research papers that demonstrate significant impact, high relevance, and meaningful contributions to the advancement of knowledge and academic practice. This achievement reflects UNIMUS’s strong commitment to fostering a culture of research excellence, academic innovation, and international collaboration. It also highlights the role of UNIMUS students as change agents who are capable of competing and contributing on a global stage. It is hoped that this success will inspire the entire academic community at UNIMUS to further enhance the quality of research and scientific publications, while strengthening the university’s position as a globally competitive higher education institution.

FKG UNIMUS Responds in Aceh, Strengthening Oral Health Services in Disaster Emergency Efforts

The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (FKG UNIMUS) took part in a humanitarian mission by providing dental and oral health services to communities affected by the disaster in Aceh from January 1–7, 2026. This initiative reflects a rapid response to post-disaster health needs, particularly in oral health, which is often overlooked in emergency situations. This program was carried out through collaboration between FKG UNIMUS, RSUD Cideres, and the Ikatan Radiologi Kedokteran Gigi Indonesia (IRKGI). A joint team consisting of medical professionals, lecturers, and volunteers was deployed directly to affected areas to deliver healthcare services. The services included dental examinations and treatments for various community groups, ranging from children to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and pregnant women. In addition to clinical services, the team also provided education on the importance of maintaining oral hygiene, especially under limited conditions during disaster recovery. As a preventive measure, the community also received dental hygiene kits to reduce the risk of further health problems due to inadequate sanitation and facilities after the disaster. This initiative demonstrates strong cross-institutional collaboration between universities, hospitals, and professional organizations in supporting health-based disaster response efforts. The presence of medical teams in affected areas is expected to help ease the burden on communities and accelerate their recovery process. Furthermore, this activity highlights the strategic role of dental health professionals in disaster management, not only in curative services but also in preventive and educational efforts. Through this program, FKG UNIMUS reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in community service. Participation in humanitarian missions is part of its continuous effort to contribute to disaster response across Indonesia. Looking ahead, FKG UNIMUS hopes to sustain similar initiatives as part of its social responsibility while strengthening the role of health education institutions in enhancing community resilience in facing disasters.

HIMAPROSA UNIMUS Promotes Women’s Empowerment through the Revitalization of ASA School

The Student Association of the English Literature Study Program (HIMAPROSA) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS) implemented the Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa) through the revitalization of the ASA School (Actualization, Welfare, and Action) for women in Sidodadi Village, Patean District, Kendal Regency. This initiative focuses on empowering rural women through sustainable non-formal education. The program aims to enhance women’s knowledge and skills in several areas, including local commodity processing, crafting products from waste materials, product marketing strategies, and basic financial management. The activities were conducted offline over approximately two and a half months, involving collaboration with the village government, PKK cadres, and the local community. Women in Sidodadi Village actively participated in the program through participatory learning sessions designed to encourage engagement and collaboration. The ASA School serves as a learning platform to strengthen women’s capacity in utilizing local resources, ultimately contributing to household economic resilience. The program was supervised by Yulia Mutmainnah, S.S., M.Hum., with Nila Fitriah serving as the team leader of the PPK Ormawa HIMAPROSA. In addition to being a form of community service, this initiative also enhances students’ organizational capacity, particularly in designing and implementing programs that are responsive to community needs.

Unimus Implements Smart Irrigation to Support Chili Farmers in Ambarawa

AMBARAWA | Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (Unimus) carried out a community service program by introducing a smart irrigation system to improve water efficiency for chili farmers in the Manunggal Roso Farmer Group, Ambarawa, Semarang Regency. The program is led by Radiktyo Nindyo Sumarno, S.T., M.T., and is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology through the Diktisaintek Berdampak scheme. The activity began with a socialization session and discussion with the farmers, held at the home of one of the group members. During the session, the Unimus team explained how the smart irrigation system works and highlighted the benefits of applying technology to optimize water usage, especially for chili cultivation, which requires precise and controlled irrigation. According to Radiktyo Nindyo Sumarno, the implementation of this technology is expected to address the inefficiencies of traditional manual irrigation methods. With the smart system, water usage can be better regulated, leading to increased productivity and reduced operational costs. The program also included interactive discussions between the team and the farmers. Members of the Manunggal Roso Farmer Group expressed positive responses and hope for continuous assistance in implementing the technology. Through this initiative, Unimus reaffirms its commitment to promoting the use of appropriate technology in agriculture as a way to enhance farmers’ welfare and support more efficient and sustainable farming practices.

FEB UNIMUS Demonstrates Its Role in Producing Young Entrepreneurs through Expo and Alumni Teaching Program

Semarang — The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS) organized an Expo and Alumni Teaching program on Friday, December 19, 2025, held on campus. This initiative served as a practical learning platform for students to enhance their confidence, creativity, and readiness to face the professional and business world. The program was designed as an implementation of practice-based entrepreneurship learning, providing students with opportunities to showcase products, projects, and business ideas they have developed במהלך their studies. Through this activity, students were not only expected to understand entrepreneurial theories but also to develop the courage to present, communicate, and market their products directly to the public. The event began with an opening ceremony reflecting religious and national values, including the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, the Muhammadiyah anthem, Qur’an recitation, and a joint prayer. In her remarks, the Dean of FEB UNIMUS emphasized that this program serves as a real learning space for students to explore and develop their potential beyond the classroom. She highlighted the importance of confidence and courage as key competencies in facing an increasingly competitive professional environment. Therefore, FEB UNIMUS consistently encourages students to be active, creative, and innovative through various developmental programs. The Rector of UNIMUS also expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that the Expo and Alumni Teaching program plays an important role in building an entrepreneurial learning ecosystem involving both students and alumni. He stressed that education should not only focus on academic achievement but also on character building, including discipline, responsibility, risk-taking, and perseverance. Furthermore, he emphasized that entrepreneurship education must involve real practice, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in managing business opportunities. In this way, graduates are expected not only to become job seekers but also job creators. The participation of successful alumni added significant value to the event. Through the “Alumni Teaching” session, alumni shared their experiences, challenges, and strategies in building and sustaining businesses. This interactive session provided inspiration for students to begin their entrepreneurial journeys early. In addition to the talk show sessions, the Expo also featured a wide range of student products, including those from culinary, services, creative industries, and innovation-based startups. This demonstrated FEB UNIMUS’s commitment to producing graduates who are adaptive, creative, and competitive in today’s dynamic industrial landscape. The event concluded with the announcement and awarding of the best participants, highlighting the importance of collaboration between faculty, students, and alumni in shaping a generation of independent, competitive, and future-ready young entrepreneurs.

UNIMUS Goes Global: Strategic Collaboration with Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Malaysia Officially Begins

Semarang | December 18, 2025 — Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS) has once again strengthened its international network through an International Academic Collaboration Meeting with Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia. The event was followed by the signing of an Implementation Arrangement (IA) / Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a foundation for sustainable academic cooperation. This initiative reflects UNIMUS’s commitment to advancing the internationalization of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in education, research, student development, and global collaboration. The event was attended by university leaders, faculty representatives, and related units, including the Vice Rector IV of UNIMUS, leaders of the Faculty of Economics and Business, heads and secretaries of study programs, as well as representatives from units responsible for international cooperation and academic development. From UTP, attendees included Saravanan Muthiah (Vice Provost of Student Affairs), Dr. Muhammad Ridhuan Tony Lim Bin Abdullah (Senior Lecturer), Nor Adela Dinyanti (Director of Student Enrichment), and Ahmad Pg Abdullah (Senior Manager of Student Empowerment). The event was also attended by Dr. Jaka Aminata, representing Universitas Diponegoro and the Centre for Complex Systems and Interdisciplinary Studies (CCSIS), further strengthening cross-institutional and interdisciplinary collaboration. During the meeting, UNIMUS and UTP officially signed the Implementation Arrangement (IA), covering joint academic activities, collaborative research, student and faculty development, and participation in international conferences. This partnership serves as a strong foundation for sustainable and impactful global networking. In his remarks, the Vice Rector IV of UNIMUS emphasized that this collaboration is a strategic step in expanding the university’s global presence. He stated that the partnership aims to promote knowledge exchange, strengthen joint research, and enhance the capacity of students and faculty to face global challenges. Meanwhile, Saravanan Muthiah expressed appreciation for UNIMUS’s commitment to building meaningful international collaboration. He highlighted that such partnerships open opportunities for student empowerment, experience exchange, and impactful academic cooperation. Informatics Undergraduate Program Strengthens Students’ Understanding of Modern AI to Prepare for Industry 2030

Semarang | The Undergraduate Informatics Study Program organized an expert lecture focusing on strategies for implementing modern artificial intelligence, including Generative AI, AIoT, and Explainable AI, as an initial step in preparing students to face the challenges of Industry 2030. The event was attended by first- and third-semester students, lecturers, and program leaders, reflecting a proactive response to the rapid advancement of AI technologies across various sectors. The lecture featured Ir. Prayitno, S.ST., M.T., Ph.D. from Politeknik Negeri Semarang as the keynote speaker, with Dr. Dhendra Marutho, S.Kom., M.Kom. serving as moderator. The Head of the Informatics Undergraduate Program, Muhammad Sam’an, S.Si., M.Mat., along with faculty members, also attended to provide academic reinforcement to participants. In his presentation, the speaker emphasized the importance of understanding AI not only from a technical perspective but also from conceptual and practical viewpoints. The discussion covered developments in Generative AI and the integration of AI with physical devices through AIoT. Additionally, the importance of Explainable AI was highlighted to ensure that intelligent systems remain transparent, ethical, and accountable. In his opening remarks, the Head of the Study Program stated that this activity serves as an important introduction for early-semester students to understand the direction of informatics, which is increasingly intertwined with AI. Although students have not formally studied AI yet, early exposure is considered essential to keep pace with rapid technological developments. He further noted that student development programs and competitions in informatics are increasingly focused on AI-related fields. Therefore, this expert lecture is expected to provide relevant insights, knowledge, and preparation for students to adapt to future industry demands and technological advancements. Through this initiative, the Informatics Undergraduate Program reaffirms its commitment to delivering contextual and adaptive learning aligned with global industry needs, particularly in preparing students for the era of Industry 2030.

Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang Strengthens Global Collaboration with Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Tianjin, December 16, 2025 — The Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (FK Unimus) has officially expanded its international partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TUTCM), China. This collaboration represents a strategic effort to promote the internationalization of education and the advancement of scientific development, particularly in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The FK Unimus delegation was warmly welcomed by the leadership of TUTCM, including the university president, vice presidents, and representatives from affiliated hospitals and international cooperation units. Meanwhile, the Unimus delegation was led by the Vice Rector IV for Cooperation and Development Planning, accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the Director of RS Unimus, and the Vice Director of RS Unimus. During the meeting, both institutions explored various forms of academic and clinical collaboration. Planned programs include student exchange initiatives, short-term TCM training for FK Unimus students in 2026, and the development of a visiting professor program to strengthen expertise in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Vice Rector IV of Unimus emphasized that this partnership is expected to broaden the global perspective of students and faculty while enriching integrative healthcare approaches that combine scientific knowledge with cultural practices. He highlighted that this collaboration offers valuable opportunities to enhance the competencies of students and medical professionals, particularly in TCM. Similarly, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine noted that the short training and visiting professor programs will serve as a foundation for future curriculum development and collaborative research. Through this MoU, FK Unimus and TUTCM are committed to establishing a sustainable partnership focused on improving the quality of education, research, and healthcare services at an international level.
