Baitul Arqom Muhammadiyah is a structured cadre development and training system designed for members, leaders, and the academic community within the Muhammadiyah organization. This program aims to strengthen Islamic ideology, develop leadership character, and align participants with a shared vision and mission in carrying out organizational responsibilities. It also seeks to cultivate common perspectives, integrity, and a unified mindset among participants.
In addition, the program reinforces ideological values and professional ethics in accordance with the principles of Progressive Islam (Islam Berkemajuan). Baitul Arqom is widely implemented across various levels, including organizational leaders, educators, staff, and new students in Muhammadiyah Higher Education Institutions, where it often serves as a mandatory academic requirement.
Philosophically, the term “Baitul Arqom” (House of Arqam) is derived from the historical house of Arqam bin Abi Arqam, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which served as a secret center for early Islamic teaching and spiritual development.
The program content includes strengthening understanding of Al-Islam and Muhammadiyah values (AIK), worship practices, Qur’anic recitation, and personal development topics such as Emotional Spiritual Quotient (ESQ).
Beyond being a leadership training program, Baitul Arqom serves as a strategic instrument to sustain social values within the Muhammadiyah ecosystem. It ensures that principles of humanity, justice, and Islamic ethics are continuously preserved across generations through the following key aspects:
Baitul Arqom functions as an investment in human resources by equipping participants with both spiritual (ESQ) and intellectual competencies. This ensures a continuous supply of capable and ethical leaders, enabling the organization to remain relevant while maintaining its core identity.
The program brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds—ranging from leaders to staff—under a unified vision of Progressive Islam. Through intensive interaction, it fosters strong solidarity, minimizes internal conflict, and strengthens teamwork and organizational harmony.
Sustainability depends on the effective transmission of core values. Baitul Arqom ensures that professional ethics, a spirit of service, and Muhammadiyah ideology are preserved across generations, allowing its institutions (such as schools and hospitals) to remain aligned with their original humanitarian mission.
Graduates of Baitul Arqom demonstrate heightened awareness of social issues. This contributes to sustained positive societal impact through active engagement in community empowerment, poverty alleviation, and social justice initiatives.
Inspired by the philosophy of the House of Arqam, the program strengthens the cultural foundation of the organization. A strong organizational culture enhances resilience, enabling Muhammadiyah to adapt effectively to external challenges and global changes.
This program contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting holistic and lifelong learning through character development, leadership training, and the strengthening of ethical and spiritual values within the academic community.
Additionally, it supports SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by fostering integrity, ethical responsibility, and strong organizational values that contribute to sustainable and accountable institutions.
